A woman left her child in a hot car after spanking him several times for throwing sand at his younger brother. The incident took place in South Carolina.
According to local reports, police responded to Calhoun Drive Beach Access #14 on Wednesday afternoon after receiving a child abuse complaint. A witness told the officers that he saw a woman dragging a small child from the beach to a car by his arm and spanking the boy several times before grabbing him around his neck and pushing him into the vehicle.
The witness then took the officers to the car. The officers saw the child in the rear seat of the vehicle. The officers unlocked the door and noticed that the vehicle was very hot. They spoke with the child.
“He seemed flushed and frightened, as he was hesitant to speak to me. I called for EMS to respond to check the victim’s vitals,” one of the officers wrote in the incident report. The child then told the officers that his mother, identified as 25-year-old Destiny Brogan, got furious after she saw him throwing sand at his younger brother. She spanked him several times before putting him in the vehicle with all the windows completely closed.
“After a short time, the subject walked up from the beach with her minor child, inquiring what was going on at her vehicle. Sgt. Muldoon explained to her what had happened and the complaint. She explained to Sgt. Muldoon, and later myself, that she never put the victim in her vehicle, but she did spank him and told him to come down to the beach when he was ready,” the report stated.
“Her story differed from the victim’s and complainant’s. It was noted that the outside ambient temperature was 75 degrees,” it said adding that the officers reached the scene about 11 minutes after receiving a call from the witness.
The mother was taken into custody and charged with cruelty with children. She remained in jail with her bond set at $2,500. Meanwhile, the victim and his younger brother were in the custody of the Department of Social Services.
